This Lotus 49 was one of a few cars on track for a demo at this year’s Monterey Reunion. The others were pretty special, including a Mercedes 300 SLR and a Williams FW14. But this 49 really stood out. It is strange to see a period-correct car and driver on a modern track: no roll cage, no modern race suit, no stickers. It was almost like Jim Clark was teleported onto the track from 1967. Of course, the driver wasn’t going as quickly as Jim Clark would have, but you can’t tell that from these photos.

I only got a few photos of the 49, and most of them were out of focus. I edited these photos to show the contrast between the modern setting and the 49, so I adjusted the colors and chose a slightly blurry shot to bring it closer to the look of a period photo. I got the result I wanted, as the 49 and its driver contrasted against the modern curbs, fences, and photographers. I’d like to imagine that this car mysteriously appeared on track, drove a few laps, and disappeared.
